23: Women’s Health, Serving Others and Being a Self Advocate with Dr. Allie Demers
Today you will hear from my guest, Dr. Allie Demers who is now a Mama of two, and actually, we did this interview several months back so she was still pregnant with her second at the time that we spoke! In addition to raising her kiddos, my guest has always been passionate about helping others. She has spent the last 7 years working as a Women’s Health Specialist in the field of Physical Therapy. She has a special interest in the care of pregnant and postpartum women. After having her daughter in 2015 she has become more passionate about advocating to improve the standards of care for post-partum women in this county. Allie loves her job and the ability to empower women to live a healthier, pain free life. My guest believes that service to others leads to greatness.
After starting her family, my guest quickly realized that with her schedule she wasn’t able to give patients her all and come home and do the same for her family. That’s when her journey as an entrepreneur began. At the beginning of 2016, she was introduced to an opportunity that has allowed her to take a step back from her physical therapy career by decreasing her hours and focusing on a better work-life balance. Since beginning this journey, she has been spending time educating customers on award-winning products. She has also continued her passion for helping others by building and training a team of professional, passionate individuals around the country to create their own home based businesses, realize their potential, and go after their dreams.
Listen in to hear my guest talk about:
- how both of her jobs have allowed her to server and empower her community in different ways
- how a random placement resulted in her specializing in women’s health after originally thinking she would work in pediatric PT
- how a survey she shared resulted in a surprisingly high percentage of women whose doctors did not speak to them about the top 5 postpartum issues that she treats – and how she is helping to bring more awareness to these issues
- how common actually does not mean ‘normal’ when it comes to postpartum health issues
- some of her fears about having a second child and still being able to have time for herself, definitely a very relatable concern, it was great to hear that real talk
- some of her self-care tips and how they have changed based on her life circumstances
- some of the challenges of contract work and working for herself in terms of taking a maternity leave
- why she encourages you to never turn down an invitation
