In this “Rev” episode, I talk about resistance; resistance around anything that might be holding you back from being productive or moving the needle forward toward your goals. I’ve had recent conversations with friends about how to break through the resistance in order to accomplish more and today I’m asking you to think about 3 things when you start to feel overwhelmed or resistant to tackling something on your list:
- A quick mindset shift: consider what you are pursuing something that you ‘get’ to do, an opportunity, a privilege, versus something that you ‘have’ to do, a chore, a burden. Sometimes, this simple mindset shift can give you the energy you need to get started
- Just start! Easier said than done, I realize. But, this could be applied to a less-than interesting project with a quickly approaching deadline, this could relate to exercise, or even something as simple as preparing lunches for the next day or putting away the dishes. Just start – give yourself some time, 5-10 minutes to see how you feel, is this really SO terrible? In many cases, you’ll find yourself on the other side of this daunting task. AND in some cases, maybe you’re still feeling the resistance… in which case,
- Say ‘no’, not right now. Take a break, walk away, push the laundry on to the floor and fold it in an hour, or maybe the next day. It’s up to you to decide, “is this crucial to get done in the moment?” Rather than looking at your tasks from under a micro-scope, pull back and assess the full-picture. What does your day look like? What do the next couple of hours look like? How can you optimize your time and energy?
I hope that you find these reminders helpful when it comes to feeling resistance around things on your to-do list whether it’s for work or home-life, and I’d love your feedback in the comments! Thanks, as always for tuning in.
